RHN Families With Children- Happy Fall 2017! We apologize for the long absence of communications from RHN’s Families With Children committee, but hope that everyone had a wonderful summer and is settling into a workable routine for the fall! This is such a wonderful time of year to be in San Francisco. While the rest of the country is preparing for cooler weather, we are heading to our local parks and beaches to enjoy a few more months of warm sunshine! However, fall can also be a uniquely stressful time for families in San Francisco. Kids heading back to school or starting new schools can present logistical challenges, friends may have moved away over the summer and there are new friends to be made, and the seemingly daunting (but really very doable!) school application process begins for many. It can all seem a bit overwhelming, but please remember that you are part of a thriving community of families successfully raising children in Russian Hill and you can and should turn to your neighbors for advice and collaboration. To help you get to know your amazing neighbors, we are busy planning some fun upcoming events for Russian Hill families this fall:
SATURDAY SEPTMBER 9th from 9:30am -12pm: RHN MONTHLY NEIGHBORHOOD SWEEP
Please join Russian Hill Neighbors for a neighborhood volunteer sweep. We meet at the NE corner of Leavenworth & Union. DPW provides the brooms, bags, gloves, trash-pickers, and dust pans. We team up and go to work picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks & gutters, and giving the neighborhood a good spiffing up. Children are welcome and it is a great way to meet your neighbors while making a difference in your community. Please RSVP to improvement @rhnsf.org if you are interested.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22nd from 4-6pm: RHN FAMILY NIGHT AT HELEN WILLS PARK
Please join Russian Hill Neighbors for a fun afternoon gathering at Helen Wills Playground! RHN will provide snacks and other activities for the kids, and it is a wonderful way to end the week and connect with other families with children in the neighborhood. This event is open to all, so please spread the word to any other Russian Hill families who might be interested!
SATURDAY OCTOBER 28th from approx. 3-5pm (exact time and place TBD): POLK STREET MERCHANTS / RHN TRICK-OR-TREATING HALLOWEEN EVENT
Please reserve the afternoon of Saturday October 28 and start getting your costumes ready for a fun pre-Halloween event on Polk Street! The second annual event is still in the planning stages, but there will definitely be trick-or-treating at many local businesses along Polk Street, pumpkin decorating at a nearby location, and other fun surprises. We will provide more details as the event is finalized.
If you have ideas for other things you would like to see RHN do to support our local families, or are interested in helping out at our events for families, please let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you would like to get more involved in RHN in a leadership role please contact us at email@example.com
Finally, if you are not already a member, please consider formally joining Russian Hill Neighbors. The all-volunteer board of our non-profit organization works year-round to help make Russian Hill a better place to live. Funds we generate from Annual Membership directly support our events and initiatives such as those listed above! Please renew your tax-deducible membership or consider joining today if you have not already via our Membership page. Thank you!
– Rec & Parks got a quote from their vendor for an child-sized basketball hoop. The low end is $2269.94 with options available up to $3300 (before freight).
– Rec & Parks has requested a quote from their vendor for 4 new garbage cans. These could be $5,000-$6,000 each. These would not be RHN’s highest priority for funding.
– Rec & Parks is requesting a quote from their Structural Maintenance Division for new fencing + secondary gate outside of the existing park entrance to increase safety for children.
– Recreation & Parks Department has submitted the purchase order for the electric cart funded by RHN. We are looking into “donated by Russian Hill Neighbors” sticker to attach to it.
– The RHN Parks Committee, along with Families for North Beach Playgrounds, planted a Magnolia tree and pulled enough weeds to fill a pickup truck during a successful community work day on March 11th with volunteers of all ages.
Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Address: Brick & Mortar Music Hall, 1710 Mission StreetFor more information on our Russian Hill parks, contact Christine Welland, RHN Parks Chair at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Families With Children in Russian Hill – We hope your 2017 is off to a wonderful start and that you are getting out and enjoying our neighborhood despite the rainy weather! If you have ideas of things you would like to see RHN do this year to support our local families, please let us know at email@example.com. Also please note that due to personal circumstances, communications and events for Families With Children will be limited this Spring and Summer, but will pick up again in the Fall. Please join Russian Hill Neighbors and the merchants of Polk Street for a fun Halloween event this Saturday! Kids, parents, and pets are meeting in front of FLIPP (1400 Green Street @ Polk) at about 3pm and then walking both sides of Polk to pick up treats at a bunch of merchants. Everyone will convene in front of Glammic (1488 Vallejo @ Polk) for games, more treats, and fun pumpkin decorating. If you cannot make it right at 3pm, participating merchants will have colorful balloons outside of their store so just head to Polk when you can, start trick-or-treating, and then meet the group at Glammic. PLEASE SIGN UP if you are interested here so we know how many pumpkins to pick up: https://colehardware.yapsody.com
