Transportation Committee Report.
At its meeting of March 25, the County Transportation Authority (aka the Board of Supervisors) allocated $173,000 for a study of the extension of the Central Subway to Fisherman’s Wharf, with austation at North Beach. This study, to be under taken by MTA staff and consultants, will be completed by July. Initial indications are that the potential ridership would be large and would make this a very competitive project. We are hoping that, as a first step, the city will be able to acquire fee title to the Pagoda Theater before the lease expires in May of 2015. The City had acquired the leasehold interest in order to extract the tunnel boring machines, but could only acquire a leasehold for that purpose, because of legal restrictions. This site would make a perfect location for the station and having the
tunnel and extraction shaft already built would make it an ideal location for a station.
At the last board meeting, I informed the board that certain neighbors were opposed to the extension of the Muni route 27 on Leavenworth Street to Vallejo the down Vallejo to Van Ness. I also informed the board that I was unable to obtain from the City any rationale for this change. Despite several inquiries, I have not gotten any information as to the rationale, but was informed that the City has withdrawn the plan, inresponse to 130 letters of opposition from our neighborhood and significant opposition from neighbors on the other end of the route in the Mission District.
