Francisco Reservoir: Fundraising continues.
Macondray Lane Wooden Stairs: RHN and adjacent neighbors are working with Supervisor David Chiu’s office to determine DPW requirements for City standards in order to enable the City to take over ongoing responsibility for the stairs.
1338 Filbert Street Cottages: Despite a few “glitches,” construction continues.
AT&T Boxes: The suit filed by San Francisco Beautiful to halt installation of surface mounted boxes by AT&T was denied. RHN continues to monitor and support efforts to introduce legislation by San Francisco Beautiful and Supervisor Scott Weiner to limit and/or mitigate the impact of these boxes on San Francisco’s neighborhoods including Russian Hill. An opportunity for public comment will take place on Monday, May 5 and Monday, May 12 at the Board of Supervisors’ Land Use and Development Committee meetings, 1:30 PM, City Hall, Room 263.
Undergrounding of Utilities: Recent endorsements of the San Francisco Coalition to Underground Utilities’ efforts include Upper Noe Valley, Potrero Hill, Glen Park, Castro, and Diamond Heights’ neighborhood groups. A full color brochure has been developed and is available for distribution. The coalition has begun collecting signatures on a petition in favor of undergrounding. In order to place the issue before the San Francisco voters, four Supervisors need to agree to sponsor placing it on the ballot.
Lombard Street traffic mitigation plans: As announced at the RHN Annual Meeting by Supervisor Farrell, plans are underway for an experimental and limited closure of Lombard Street from Larkin to Leavenworth. Here are the preliminary details (pending confirmation):
• The Temporary Traffic restrictions are proposed only, and not finalized.
• The proposal must be approved by the SFMTA board in late May.
• The proposal is:
o Closure to non-local vehicle traffic on Lombard Crooked Street and East bound between Larkin & Hyde.
o Dates: weekends 6/21-6/22, 6/28-6/29, 7/4-7/6, 7/12-7/13.
o Times: Approximately 12:00 noon – 7:00 p.m.
o Traffic Control Personnel will be directing traffic.
o Signage will be provided.
• The purpose of the proposal is:
o To test the effects of closing Lombard to vehicle traffic during congested times.
The SFMTA coordinator has said that he will appreciate observations and ideas from RHN regarding the closure trial.
1000 Block of Broadway Tree Protection: There has been a recent attempt to reactivate a permit for removal of four mature trees on the south side of the 1000 block of Broadway, which had been appealed by RHN in 2006. DZLU recommended to the Board that RHN reaffirm its position in support of protecting mature trees from removal and that a letter be sent by RHN President Holligan to the Board of Appeals.
