Central Police Report June 25

Once in a while, I am asked why the Central district has numerous reported auto burglaries. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, there were 26 reported incidents on my desk. The answer is that the payoff is often big and auto burglary suspects know that they would rather be caught committing a property crime than a violent crime such as a street robbery. This point was reinforced to me when I read a report of a recent auto burglary. The victim, a 29 year old female and her boyfriend, a 37 year old male from Denver, Colorado parked their vehicle on the  500 block of Vallejo Street at 10:00 p.m. last Monday. They returned to their car 40 minutes later and discovered their window was smashed and their property was stolen from the trunk. One of the items taken was a bag which contained $12,000 in cash. This makes a good case for not leaving items in the trunk and this type of loss reminds the criminals that the tourist areas of San Francisco are places to commit this crime. Read Central 062515.
