[From the June 23, 2015 DZLU Meeting]
The Design, Zoning and Land Use Committee of Russian Hill Neighbors meets monthly to review notices of new construction and remodeling projects and to follow up on continuing projects. We monitor such things as the neighborhood impacts of traffic on Lombard Street’s “crooked” block, installation of AT&T U-Verse boxes, etc.
This month’s items of interest to the Community are…
The members of the committee are actively opposing the placement of wireless antennas on wooden utility poles in our neighborhood. Four separate appeals have been submitted to reverse DPW approvals of wireless antennas in front of homes in Russian Hill. One of these is directly in front of a home near the crooked part of Lombard Street for which an application for historic landmark status is pending.
There is a growing movement to continue the undergrounding of utilities (overhead wires) in San Francisco. Adding additional equipment to existing wooden poles will intensify the existing visual blight which mars our public vistas — including iconic views of Alcatraz — will be further compromised. Since any added equipment would have to be removed when the undergrounding efforts are successful, adding them now suggests poor planning–at best–and could delay the implementation of undergrounding.
