Hills, Stairways, Lanes, Cottages, Gardens, and Views
Russian Hill is a hilly, compact area with many stairways and small alleys that beg to be explored. It is a neighborhood that is best seen and felt by walking. You will find panoramic views, tucked-away cottages, gardens, interesting architecture, and lots of history. As you wander around the hill, take time to notice the different views from one side of the street to the other. Often houses that are tucked away on the hillsides can best be viewed from across the street or even blocks away.
The stairways/steps below are maintained by individual associations. These groups raise funds for the ongoing improvements and do regular maintenance. If you are interested in volunteering or contributing to one of these projects please leave a message at the RHN message center (267-0575), and we will forward your message to the appropriate organization.
Cars and tour buses are not allowed on these pedestrian-only streets. Each is unique in that it provides Russian Hill with a residential street with no vehicle access. Each of these lanes is different but the common characteristic, like the Russian Hill stairway gardens, is that all planting and maintenance are done by immediate neighbors. And they are for all of us to enjoy. As you walk these very special lanes, please respect the privacy of these neighborhoods.
On these three walking lanes located on Russian Hill’s eastern slope, it is not uncommon to see or hear the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill who venture to a habitat not unlike the Greenwich and Filbert Steps in Telegraph Hill. If you see or hear wild parrots on your walks on these stairs, you have not lost your mind. These are the famous Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill who have decided to take an outing to our neighborhood.
