Capt. Garret Tom of SFPD’s Central Station, serving the Barbary Coast, Chinatown, North Beach and other neighborhoods, has been promoted to commander.
Capt. Tom has served the SFPD and citizens of San Francisco for 32 years and has been captain of Central Station since 2012. He is known for his easygoing demeanor and subtle sense of humor, which usually comes out in his SFPD Central Station newsletters.
“I have very much enjoyed working with Capt. Tom over the past couple of years,” said Stephanie Greenburg, president of SoTel neighbors and co-chair of the Central Station Community Police Advisory Board. “Capt. Tom is always responsive, fair and honest, and his accessibility and personable nature has led to a highly effective partnership between Central Station and the community.
“Capt. Tom has a wonderfully contagious smile and a great sense of humor, and this always puts a room at ease. I have the greatest respect for Capt. Tom, and will miss him greatly. However, this promotion is a huge honor and well-deserved, and I wish him the very best of luck. Congratulations Captain, I mean Commander Tom!”
Captain David Lazar will become captain of Central Station this weekend. He most recently served as captain of the SFPD Academy, training new classes of officers to protect and serve the city.
