Central Police Report July 23

Auto Burglaries
Our Auto Burglary rate still remains high. Central Station Officers have made 75 arrests year to date and work every day to capture suspects. Our next strategy is to meet with as many rental car agencies as possible to develop and implement prevention plans. In addition to the work developed by Central Station’s Community Police Advisory Board with the creation of “Park Smart” informational cards, I will be proposing that a 8.5”x 11” laminated placard be placed in the passenger side window of the vehicle when parked stating “No valuables in this vehicle.” It will serve as a reminder to the tourists who rent cars to remove their valuables as well. I am always interested in ideas from the community.
Speaking of auto burglary prevention, when I was leaving work last night, I was in the station’s secure underground parking. I noticed a family placing items in their car while inside our garage. Officer Joseph Marte approached me and explained that he was handling a call for service at Hyde and Bay. Unrelated to the call, he met a couple from Utah with their three children who said that they were going to Alcatraz and were wondering where to park. Officer Marte realized there were valuables in their car and suggested the family could leave their property in our garage, enjoy the Alcatraz tour and return to our secure police garage to pick up the items. This is an example of what Central Station Officers do above and beyond to make our community safe. As I mentioned to Officer Marte as I left the garage, “one less auto burglary report today.” Read Central 072315.
