Russian Hill Neighbors, through Transportation Chair Steve Taber, has made progress toward getting the Central Subway extended to North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf, which will provide subway service to Russian Hill residents. An October, 2014 report showed that the extension would serve more than 41,000 riders daily, increase speed of travel by 50%-65% over current bus service, and would get the highest possible rating in the competition for Federal funding.
The next step is to conduct a detailed design development and community outreach, to final the design concepts and provide the technical work needed to proceed with environmental analysis and approval of the project. Through our advocacy efforts, the MTA staff has included this work in the upcoming 2016-2018 capital budget, with an allocation of $2 million.
We now need to show the MTA that there is substantial community support for this project so that the allocation remains in the budget and the work can be started. Your support is essential to our efforts. Please send a message to the MTA budget email supporting an allocation of $2 million for the Central Subway T-Line Phase III.
Email sfmtabudget@sfmta.com and let them know where you live (Russian Hill, North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf, etc), your support, and optionally your name.
With your help, we can make this tremendous transportation improvement a reality.
