Thank you to a RHN member who made mechanical street cleaning happen on his block.
See our conversation with him explaining how he did it!
RHN: What was your first step? Did you know that a link to the petition to request street sweeping is on our RHN website? Click Petition.
Member: No, I did not know that. I phoned Public Works to inquire about how to start having mechanical street sweeping service and was told about the petition process.
RHN: Was it difficult to get resident signatures?
Member: I asked a couple of neighbors to help me. The 3 of us spent a couple of hours on 2 Saturdays, knocking on doors to collect signatures. I used to work in “sales”; so knocking on doors came easily. We ended up with 86 signatures requesting street sweeping.
RHN: Did you get any objections from people worried about having to move their cars 2 times a month?
Member: Yes, a few. We just thanked these people and moved on.
RHN: What was the hardest part? Any surprises?
Member: The biggest surprise was how easy the process was ……. and that it actually worked! It was just about 3 months from starting the process until the street cleaning signs were put up. It took just the few of us neighbors who cared a little more.
To add more streets to this method of keeping our streets and gutters cleaner of liter, residents may sign and circulate petitions for their block. If 2/3 of the residents agree, regular street cleaning may be solicited. RHN will be happy to support your efforts. Feel free to email either RHN President or RHN Neighborhoodenhancement chair.
