Mayor Mark Farrell announced late January that Catherine Stefani would replace him as D2 supervisor — until elections are held in November. And Supervisor Stefani announced she will run for D2 supervisor in the upcoming November elections.
Stefani has served as San Francisco’s County Clerk since 2016. She worked at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 2007-2016, for Supervisors Michela Alioto-Pier and Mark Farrell. Previously she worked for San Jose Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez, the California Department of Justice, and Speaker Herb Wesson of the California State Assembly. She was also a deputy district attorney in Contra Costa County, where she argued 25 jury trials.
Stefani is an active volunteer. She is a leader and spokesperson for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which aims to reform gun laws. She was on the board of directors of the Homeless Prenatal Program for six years. She has raised over $50,000 to fight leukemia by competing in triathlons. She is active in Emerge California, an organization that trains women in politics. She won an “Ignite Honors” award in 2016 for “consistently putting her beliefs into action, engaging and mentoring other women and transforming her community.”
Stefani developed, hosted and produced “For The Record,” a television show about legal issues. The East Bay Business Times named her to its “40 under 40” list of leaders.
Stefani graduated from St. Mary’s College and earned a J.D. and an LL.M. from McGeorge School of Law. She is married, has two children, and has lived in Cow Hollow for 17 years.

Supervisor Stefani,
You calling the NRA a terrorist organization is an absolute disgrace and you should be ashamed for what you did. Why have you not said the same about Antifa? The Antifa thugs routinely assault peaceful citizens of the USA. There has never been a terrorist attack by the NRA or any promotion of violence. I sincerely hope that you are not re-elected. You should clean up San Francisco which has become a disgusting city that people from all walks of life and around the globe want to avoid.
Thank you

An absolute disgrace that you stopped the commission of the beautiful, original sculpture of Maya Angelou by Lava Thomas! Wow. What a perfect piece of art you crushed! Something quite original, like Maya. For outside of the library…. OMG A BOOK!!!!? How perfect, a book! A large sculpture of a book with Maya’s face on the cover looking out at whomever is looking at her. Powerful! And one of her powerful quotes. Maya’s quote about Courage. Perfect for this short attention span Instagram and selfie world. Inspired and inspiring.
It is perfect. It is quiet and contemplative. Peaceful. Focused.
Oh yes. Let’s crush the creativity that was Maya’s Life work too.
Let’s put up another boring sculpture that kids will roll their eyes at and walk on by. Yeah. Tell them they should stop and read another boring little plaque lecturing them. Stop the air around them. Stop the breeze, the sky, the light around that beautiful book with Maya looking back at THEM! Talking to THEM!
Thanks for nothing for taking this away. Ruining the process.
The RIGHT thing for you to do is reverse course. Admit you made a terrible mistake stopping this. Apologize profusely. Beg our forgiveness. Apologize to Lava Thomas and beg her forgiveness for your short sightedness and beg her to make her sculpture. Just as she envisioned it. Make this Right. Fix this now.
